HVAC Heating and Cooling

Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) is a system that regulates the indoor environment by controlling temperature, humidity, and air quality. HVAC systems use various technologies to provide thermal comfort and ensure acceptable air purity within homes and other enclosed spaces. These systems are crucial for maintaining a comfortable and healthy indoor environment year-round.

Selecting the right heating and cooling system can have a big impact on energy costs.

There are several choices available for heating and cooling your home, including air conditioners, evaporative coolers, ceiling and pedestal fans, electric and wood heaters, gas heaters and hydronic and in-slab heating. Reverse-cycle air conditioners are the most energy-efficient combined heating and cooling system you can buy.

Choosing the right system

When choosing an energy efficient air conditioning system, it is important to select the right type of Space Heating and Cooling and the right size to match your house, rooms and needs. The size of an air conditioner is determined by its heating and cooling capacity.

The specific household needs when selecting a new air conditioning system need to be considered, for example:

  • If the system is too small, it may struggle to adequately heat or cool your home during extreme temperatures and will take longer to reach a comfortable temperature.

  • If the system is too large, it will be more expensive to operate. Oversized systems can also cause significant temperature fluctuations, reducing comfort levels.

Our professional Home Assessors can explain and advise on the best system for your home, your needs and your budget.  We remove all the ‘pain points’ and explain each type of systems:

Reverse Cycle Air Conditioners

There are 3 types of reverse cycle air conditioners offered under the VEU program. These include:

 1. Multi Split - Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) system – one outdoor unit (compressor) connected to multiple indoor units, suitable for heating or cooling multiple rooms or your entire home.

This is best delivered through a VRF system. VRF systems technology enables the circulation of the minimum amount of refrigerant needed during a single heating or cooling period. VRF systems are extremely efficient because they adjust the refrigerant flow to match the exact cooling or heating needs of each room, and they don't waste energy like traditional Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) a system that operate at a constant output.

In times of extremely high energy costs, VRF Systems are proven to be highly efficient due to their ability to adjust refrigerant flow based on demand, leading to reduced energy costs over time.

VRF has become very popular in households (and businesses) and have proven to be the most efficient and effective heating and cooling system.

2. Single-split systems – one outdoor unit (compressor) connected to one indoor unit, suitable for heating or cooling a single room or open-plan area. While energy-efficient, they don't offer the same level of modulation as VRF systems, which can lead to higher energy consumption in larger installations.

3. Ducted Systems – one central outdoor unit connected to multiple indoor rooms through ducts and vents, suitable for heating or cooling your whole home. Ducted systems are an effective way to heat and cool your entire home, however they can be more expensive to install and run due to heating and cooling a larger area. Hot and cool air lost through ducts can also increase running costs.

If you choose a ducted system, the right size can depend on several factors, which should be discussed with our Home Assessor to ensure your ducting is appropriately insulated and correctly sized for your heating and cooling load. For example, ducts can lose heat if they are not well sealed and insulated. Well-designed ducting will make your system more efficient to run. If you are planning to install a ducted reverse cycle air conditioner, your existing ducting may need to be upgraded because older ducting may not be efficient or in good condition. The general rule of thumb is to replace your ducting, especially when moving from gas to a reverse cycle air conditioner. This should be discussed with our Home Assessor.
