Make Your Home Safe

Protect your family and your home from fire

Smoke alarm installation and maintenance is one of the most important aspects of protecting your family and your home from a fire. The majority of fatal fires are caused by electrical faults, heating appliances and open fires. They will often start without notice and will quickly become a danger to your family and home if there are no effective warning systems like Smoke Alarms in place.

Most fatal fires occur at night when people are asleep. Correctly positioned and fully functioning smoke alarms installed by professional smoke alarm companies help limit the damage and cost caused by fires by detecting them early.

If your home does not comply with state regulations, you’re not only putting occupants at risk, you may also find that your insurance won’t cover the cost of any losses incurred in a fire.

Is your home compliant?

All smoke alarms older than 10 years old must be replaced.

Smoke Alarms are life-saving devices that detect smoke well before any sleeping occupant would, and they provide critical seconds to implement actions to save life and property.

A Smoke Alarm installation is relatively quick and easy, and our licensed Electricians are trained to ensure they are positioned correctly and installed compliantly to leave your house and family safer.

You may also find that your insurance won’t cover the cost of any losses in a fire.

Victorian Legislation:

All Victorian residential properties must have smoke alarms on every level. This includes all houses, units, flats and townhouses. Smoke alarms must meet Australian Standard: AS 3786. For the best protection, install interconnected smoke alarms in every sleeping area and living room. If one smoke alarm activates, all alarms will sound. Install smoke alarms with a 10 year-long-life battery. If you have a smoke alarm with a 9-volt battery, you are required to replace the battery every year. If your smoke alarm emits a single, occasional beep, you need to change the battery, or the smoke alarm may be faulty and you need to replace it.

New South Wales Legislation:

Smoke alarms must be installed on every level of your home. This includes owner occupied homes, rental properties, relocatable homes, caravans and camper-vans or any other residential building where people sleep. The smoke alarms must meet the requirements of Australian Standard AS3786. Smoke alarms are also required to be installed in move-able dwellings e.g. caravans.

Why photoelectric smoke alarms?

There are two main types of smoke alarms for home use: photoelectric and ionisation. If you are unaware which type of Smoke Alarm you have in your home, now is the time to check.

You can do so by taking the Smoke Alarm down and look at the back for either “Photoelectric” or “Ionisation,” or a symbol with the letter “P” or “I” on the back.

Photoelectric smoke alarms are recommended by the various Fire Authorities and are mandatory in Queensland. The difference is how they detect fires and importantly, how quickly they respond.

Unlike Ionisation detectors, Photoelectric smoke alarms DO NOT contain any radiation. Photoelectric smoke alarms aim a light source into a sensing chamber at an angle away from the sensor. When smoke is detected, light is reflected onto the light sensor which triggers an alarm.

Photoelectric smoke alarms are generally more effective across a wider range of fires experienced in homes, they respond quicker to smouldering fires and the dense smoke given off by foam-filled furnishings and overheated PVC wiring.

If you don't have photoelectric smoke alarms and if your existing smoke alarms are older than 10 years you are urged to book a smoke alarm installation today.

Optional Smoke Alarm Controller

A Smoke Alarm Controller provides an effortless method of testing, silencing and locating triggered smoke alarms without the need to reach up to the alarms on the ceiling. Fixed to any easy access and convenient wall within your home, for only $49.

Simply discuss with our Electrician a convenient location, within your home, where you would like the controller installed. Our Electrician will then safely install it, at the agreed location, after all smoke alarms have been installed.

Advantages of photoelectric detectors include:

Photoelectric alarms see smoke as opposed to the old-style ionisation alarms which smell smoke.  This means photoelectric alarms provide an earlier warning and valuable seconds or minutes can save lives and your home.

Good for smouldering and fire dense smoke.

Not as prone to cooking nuisance alarms.

Contains no radioactive material.

Recommended by Fire Authorities and mandatory in Queensland.

At completion of your installation, you will be provided with a certificate of compliance.

Life expectancy of Smoke Detectors:

Generally, Smoke Alarms have a 10-year working life with a 10 year back up battery for hard wired detectors or 10-year lithium powered battery, after which point, their sensors can begin to lose sensitivity. The test button only confirms that the battery, electronics, and alert system are working; it doesn't mean that the smoke sensor is working. This is why you must book a Smoke Alarm installation if they are over 10 years old (Note: the date should be stamped on the back of the detector).

Existing Smoke Detectors manufactured more than 10 years ago must be replaced and comply with Australian Standards AS 3786:2023 (Note: the date should be stamped on the back of the detector).

Smoke Alarms that do not operate when tested must be replaced immediately.

Existing hardwired Smoke Alarms that need replacement, must be replaced with a hardwired Smoke Alarms with a back-up working battery.
